In Anne Perry’s novella, A Christmas Escape, Charles Latterly is fleeing his grief over the death of his wife. He travels to a remote island in the Mediterranean and finds himself in the company of eclectic characters, one of whom is a killer. Amidst a smoldering volcano and a promise he made to a dying man, will Charles be able to find the killer? Or will he be the next victim?
Anne Perry knows how to paint a picture with words. The descriptive portions of the novel are so effective and inviting that the reader cannot help being drawn into the story. Everything from the portrayal of the beautiful surroundings to the description of the food makes the setting the highlight of the story. There is an engaging mystery, and the prose is well-written. Maybe because the story is a novella, I found the characters under-developed and the ending a bit rushed.
All in all, A Christmas Escape is an entertaining read.
